Demographic Estimation and Forecasting

At PRB, we have the demographic and methodological expertise to produce high-quality estimates and projections for use in policy and planning.

For decades, we have used innovative techniques to produce estimates of demographic, socioeconomic, and health characteristics for use in policy and planning around the world.

We have an extensive track record of producing high-quality estimates of at-risk populations, such as the number of children at risk of losing health insurance under the Public Charge Rule policy, the number of noncitizens and children at risk of an undercount in the U.S. 2020 Census, and the number of women and girls at risk of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) in the United States.

Our work also spans a range of health topics, from province-level estimates of adolescent fertility in Nepal to county-level estimates of children with special health-care needs and adverse childhood experiences in California to state-level projections of coronavirus cases and deaths among the U.S. Latino population.

Since 1962, PRB has produced global and country-level estimates of population size, total fertility rate, and other demographic characteristics and population projections, and published them in the World Population Data Sheet, which is used by policy and programmatic decisionmakers around the world. We also produce high-quality demographic and socioeconomic projections for use in regional planning, such as population, housing, and employment forecasting and analytical support to the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG) for their use in regional transportation and housing planning.
